RT Fun and Cover Model Mania

I am finally popping in here after returning from RT. When I powered up the ole laptop (or new laptop, as the case shall be), I had more than 775 emails. I am STILL crawling out from underneath the avalanche. Almost getting there...finally!

But we had a blast at the event, and our room was on the beach level, so we looked right out at the ocean. This made for a good setting each morning when Jud and I had coffee and stared out at the ocean watching the sun rise!

Then almost every morning I walked on the beach (since I'm trying to lose twenty pounds by RT!) A couple of those times I walked with Karmela Johnson, who I had no idea was an aerobics instructor! Yikes! She's 4 foot 10--and I'm 5 foot 9, but I had a hard time keeping up with her! Can't you just tell this woman is just an adorable ball of energy? Look at her! She's also a fantastic writer! Watch out NYC!

I got to spend a whole afternoon with one of my best agent friends, Kristin Nelson. Here's a pic of Kristin, my hubby and Kristin's sis. A great pic!

Saw some of our wonderful clients like...
Sylvia Day

Shelley Bradley

And sign books next to Angela Knight, Harley Jane Kozak and Betina Krahn...

I wish I had lots of cover model shots to share with you, but I *do* have a special link with something fun that Elaine made for me while I was away. It's of the guy on both my covers, Nathan Kamp. Go check out the Parallel Realm Blog and see what I mean!!!!! Elaine is a wonder woman!
hugs to all! D

Turn! Turn! Turn! (Or: Deidre Gets Naked)

Techno Babble. This will be my new term for the scrambling, mind-numbing confusion that ensues when one’s technological framework collapses. This past week saw the demise of my laptop and then the massive effort to restart my entire technological experience. If laptop failed, then blackberry wasn’t aligned—even today I learn I can’t send out email from home because of improper settings. So if you’re awaiting an email reply from me, it will likely arrive on Monday. Yes, technology, for all it enables me to be a better agent, a more quality friend, and a faboo author can sometimes simply fail. And I hate the insecurity that failure brings about in my reliable world.

And it’s not like I don’t understand the workings of these modern conveniences. In fact, those in my life (and those who read this blog) are quite aware that I am a techno queen. A lesser known fact is that for six years prior to agenting I worked in the computer technology field. There’s a surprise, and perhaps something many do NOT know about me. In fact, today while driving on the interstate I saw a license plate that read something like 13F2450 and realized that whenever I see that precise format of letters and numbers—particularly with the third being a letter not digit—I flash on IBM part numbers. It was an interesting era of my life, one when I truly believed God had placed me on the shelf. Many people have life crises in their forties or fifties, wondering why they’ve been put here, but mine came through my twenties after leaving the world of filmmaking.

You see, I'm one of the lucky ones--I’d immediately exited college and stepped into my dream career—and this without having spent day one in film school, something I figured I’d need in order to work in film production. How wrong I was! Because when a dream is meant to come to fruition, heaven itself moves to make it happen. There’s a Goethe quote to that effect, and I’ve always seen it reflected in my own life. That summer post-Mary Washington College (1988) I sold food and freezer plans in the home. Also a hidden tidbit about my life. I can honestly say I am one of those natural born salespeople you hear mythologized. And I'd come up through the ranks: While working at American Frozen Foods each summer as a telemarketer, I was scouted as a good potential sales person to…go in the home! In the words of Tom Cruise in JERRY MAGUIRE I was the master of the living room, or so it turned out once they gave me my anchor-sized briefcase and sent me out on “sits.”

In no time at all during that summer of love I rose to the top of food selling ranks: I was the number three sales person throughout the national corporation, toppling the records of mid-thirty year old mega giants. The kind of men (not women) that were always pointed out to us as champions, the sort those in the Fleebold, Indiana office should aspire to emulate. Btw, there is no Fleebold, Indiana that I know of, but I can’t recall where the fifteen or so sales outposts of American Frozen Foods were located after so many years. Anyway, I was pulling down a killer salary for a twenty-two year old, but there was one thing missing: I was unhappy. Unsatisfied and feeling shelved. So I prayed a simple-yet-heartfelt prayer, asking God the following, “Isn’t there something, Lord, that I can do to utilize my creative gifts.” You see, for all my driven nature, for all my discipline and focus that you see reflected in me today, those were acquired traits. At twenty-two I was a drifting mess, a living Jack Kerouac disciple who had spent the past four years on the road, biking around Europe, under-achieving in school, and generally slacking. There was no post-college plan. There was just me, in Atlanta, living with Pamela and trying to figure out who I was going to be.

Heartfelt, earnest prayers have a way of being fulfilled—something to remember, good friends. A few days later, perhaps only a day, I can’t say for sure, but I found myself in a car wash. Hardly the stratosphere of priests or miracles, but there I was, watching my car muddle its way through the brushes and soap and wax, and I heard a man on the pay phone. “I need to get more cans of thirty-five mil,” he said, and my body tensed. He worked in movies! This was my possible entrance into my dream job! But my young mind quickly provided an argument, “Oh, I’m just young, and know nothing…what could he have for me?” So you know what God does in these situations, don’t you? The man came and started chatting with me. Next thing I knew I asked if they were hiring, and he smiled demurely, saying only, “We might be,” as he slipped me his card. Two weeks later and I had an entry level position at one of the top independent film companies in Georgia. A year later and I was working on a top NBC television show, In the Heat of the Night.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with my stint in computers, but let’s flash forward by about eight or nine years. I’d found myself in sales again since, as mentioned, this has always been my most natural gift. But not even selling something creative or inspiring—selling computer equipment. Granted, I was selling it all over the world in a post-communist era of commerce, which meant taking our company into little outposts like Croatia and so forth. See, God always keeps it interesting while he’s testing and growing you in a vineyard that might otherwise seem boring. He knew I loved travel and other cultures, so he gave me the opportunity to take our company into twenty-two new countries. But I felt shelved. I wanted to write and I wanted my own business, so day after day I prayed the, “whyGodwhymewhynotnowhymewhywhywhywhy?” prayers. Every. Single. Day.

When the time and inspiration came to completion, I opened the agency—which I will post about tomorrow—how that miracle transpired, but the thing I learned? The thing I could see had been so masterful in the divine plan? That every one of those six years at that particular, family-owned company had been a proving ground, and had been about teaching me about owning the agency. To this day, I put those acquired lessons into play, and while that job had absolutely nothing to do with agenting on the surface, it had everything to do with perseverance, self-starting, aggressiveness, and closing deals. I’m the agent I am today because when it made no sense on the surface, I stayed the course.

In this agenting gig I meet many writers who feel they’re on the shelf, or that their time will never come. I just want to tell each of you who might be reading this blog that there’s a time and season for all things, and that while you might feel on the shelf, trust that it’s part of some greater outworking. One day you may well look back on your own time of whyGodwhywhy and know that there’s been a purpose. As the Good Book says, “To everything there is a season.”

Your time is coming too.
Keep going. You will get there.

GUEST BLOGGER LYNNE CONNOLLY: THE ALPHA MALE - IS IT TIME FOR A CHANGE?

I love reading and writing paranormal romance. I love the alpha hero, I really do, but – do they all have to be alphas? I don't like all these alphas that populate the books, or rather, I do, but sometimes I want something else. Something (God forbid!) Different!

That might be the reason why I've only made one Amazon order this year, and I've been to e-publishers far more times than that, where there is much more variety to be had. I’m beginning to groan, and not with pleasure, when yet another big, tough, gruff, bossy man strides into the scene and tries to take over. He'll solve the problem, he'll be forceful and gentle with the heroine by turns, he'll fight the bad guys, he'll have an enormous member, he'll have an inner angst which the heroine will solve, and there you are. I would really like to read something else.
Give us the alpha hero, but give us some betas and gammas too!

A beta hero would be great to read about. Why shouldn't a werewolf be a beta, a gentle, caring man? I adore gammas - I think a lot of gammas are labeled alphas, just for marketing purposes. The loner, the man who doubts himself sometimes, the man who actually talks to the heroine and discusses things with her, a man who respects her opinion and isn’t afraid to act on it if he thinks she’s right.

I write people. I deliberately avoid the alpha-beta-gamma thing, and I think that's why I have dozens of rejection letters along the lines of; “We love your writing but we don't see how we can fit it into our lines - can you make your hero an alpha,” or something like that. I could, and if I wanted to bore myself to death writing the same character over and over I might, but believe it or not, money isn’t my prime objective in this (not that I’d complain if a bit more came my way!). Now I’ve found a publishing home, and I’m happy there, I’ve learned the benefits of having an editor who genuinely loves what I write and encourages me to keep my vision intact (thanks, Gail!)

I spent years in business, working for big corporations, and the alpha male of the romance book wouldn't have lasted ten minutes there, not with the team work and co-operation expected of them. The entrepreneur who doesn’t listen to anyone but goes with his personal vision is the exception, not the rule, and it doesn’t lead to long term business success. Once you remove the ‘image’ many put out, you see the right hand and left hand men, the people a good businessman (and sadly, it is still usually a man) has with him, not to ‘yes’ him, but to give him valuable advice. So perhaps I write about men I’ve known, men who are strong but listen to people, and learn from them, men who make their own decisions, but try not to upset people when they carry them out.

A man who knows how to handle a gun doesn’t wave it about all the time.

And yes, I love Gil Grissom

And the Winner Is?!?!

Several months ago, I paired up with my wonderful friend Vicki Denney at Newandusedbooks.com to host a contest in honor of Parallel Attraction. The idea to feature ALIEN perfume as a special giveaway initially began while I was strolling through Sakes Fifth Avenue in NYC last year. They were promoting the perfume, and at first I thought only of Gena Showalter and Christmas! But then later an idea began to percolate…what if I gave away bottles of ALIEN perfume as a promotion for my alien romances? Hence the ALIEN giveaway was spawned! (Though I hate to use the words alien and spawned in the same sentence describing my series! LOL!)

A gigantic thanks to the multitudes of fans that signed up, we appreciate everyone’s participation and support. Without any further ado, the winners are…

1st Place: ALIEN perfume and signed copy of Parallel Attraction
SANDRA STIPINS

2nd Place: Autographed copy of Parallel Attraction paired with Parallel Series goody bag
PATRICIA MELLERT
&
KATHY WEBER
Congrats to all of our winners!

And, for all of you who haven’t had a chance to check out this website yet, what are you waiting for?! It’s a great place to catch up on new releases, author interviews, and great reviews. I might also mention that they highlight different authors every month, and hint hint hint you may have seen May’s spotlight around somewhere!

Weird Publishing

I once had a call from an inmate, the kind of call that came in right as I was leaving the office. Passed it off to my assistant who later informed me that the woman was calling from prison--on her cell phone--because she was writing a book. HOW NOT TO KILL YOUR PARENTS. Uh, huh. And why was she in said prison? For murdering her folks. I kid you not. A real query call at TKA.

So, for some reason Jill Monroe's post put me in mind of that, crime and romance and all that. This is seriously one of the weirder things I've read lately. Check it out.

And check out my new secret beefcake blog. Ah, it's really not that bad. :) But I'm having fun at the moment with pics...which actually led me to Michele Rowen's blog by accident (she's posted some Vin Diesel at some point, and while searching for pics of him for MY blog, wound up at hers!!)

Take care,
Deidre

PARALLEL HEAT...the Suspense Gets Hotter!

Until publication date, that is! :) I wanted to post the cover copy, which I didn't do until now since people hadn't read the first book yet. But I think it's been out long enough that I can whet your appetite a bit for the next book in the series which, btw, is already availble from Amazon. Just click here.

From the back cover:

In her "fresh [and] wonderfully creative"* Parallel Attraction, Deidre Knight created an unforgettable alternate world of danger, seduction, and the mysteries of time. Now she returns to that world as the destiny of two sworn enemies is changed forever by the unpredictable perils of love....

Warrior and royal guardian Marco McKinley has been assigned a vital mission on Earth, where a war between human fighters and otherworldly soldiers is rising. But he's also been warned about twists of fate yet to come-ones that will transform him into the enemy of his own people and appoint him the personal protector of beautiful soldier Thea Haven.

Little do Marco and Thea know, but they have met before in an alternate universe, and they are bound by betrayal and vengeance. Now, on a world at the brink of destruction, they feel only a forbidden passion and the unease that comes with it....

So much of my fan mail has been about hoping Marco gets his own story, and even in online chats folks have really pushed me for details. So I'm excited to say that, yes, PARALLEL HEAT will focus pretty heavily on Marco, though there's still plenty about Jared and Kelsey, and much more about Scott. Also, a new character will be in town. :) And she's one of my personal favorites.

More to come! Including some deleted scenes from Parallel Attraction.
Hugs! Deidre

Once Upon Stilettos

"Once Upon Stilettos is not to be missed if you're in the mood for a fast and funny read where chicklit meets urban fantasy."
-- Mary Jo Putney, author of A Kiss of Fate

ONCE UPON STILETTOS by Shanna Swendson
(Ballantine Books, April 25, 2006)

When we left Katie Chandler at the end of Enchanted, Inc., she had helped her new employers, Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. defeat Phelan Idris, a rogue wizard intent on stealing spells. By her side, and leading the battle, was hunky wizard Owen. Katie and Owen are still fighting their attraction to each other in Shanna Swendson’s hilarious and charming sequel Once Upon Stilettos, but first they have to track down a corporate spy before the company dissolves into paranoia. Then at the worst possible time, Katie's immunity to magic goes on the blink. At least she's having better luck in her social life, with men falling at her feet everywhere she goes. Has she really become that irresistible, or is it the new red shoes she felt compelled to buy? Polish your fairy wings, put on your magic shoes, click your heels three times, and join Shanna Swendson for a romantic romp amidst fairies, goblins, wizards and gargoyles.

Susan Grant & Deidre Knight

Ever want to be a fly on the wall (a very pretty one, of course) when great authors are talking it up? Here's one of those opportunities.

Susan Grant, author of upcoming YOUR PLANET OR MINE, and Deidre Knight (PARALLEL ATTRACTION) share a bit of one such conversation about writing sci-fi romance.

Witty, silly, but full of insight.

Check it out by becoming a member Deidre Knight's Yahoo! group:

POOF! It's yours! Enjoy!

Favorite Character in PARALLEL ATTRACTION? Here's your chance to be heard!

Hey, Gang:
I'm so so so so sorry (it's like I'm stuttering!) to have been majorly absent from the blogosphere lately. Life has been a bit crazy, and--among other things--every cleint on my list (well almost) has sent me new material. So I'm being pretty low-key and quiet, trying to make serious reading headway.

But in the meantime, PARALLEL ATTRACTION is cooking along! In fact, it's on the Barnes and Noble bestseller list for the second week in a row at #23. Also on Bookscan list for second week in a row at #66! So we're jamming.

Meanwhile, I have been beefing up my message board a lot, trying to get things moving over there. I love message boards and have always been a big fangirl. So check it out, and while there, you get to vote for your favorite character. Here you go:

Also, watch out for a "conversation" between Susan Grant and myself very soon.

MASTER OF WOLVES by Angela Knight
(Berkeley Sensation, April 4, 2006)

When Jim London's best friend is murdered, Jim vows to catch the killer. Leaving it for the local police to solve is out of the question, because he suspects they are involved.
Jim is more than capable of taking action if they are -- he's a werewolf. Realizing the only way to investigate the department is from the inside, he decides to go undercover -- as a police K-9.
His "handler" is lovely Faith Weston, the only person on the Clarkston Police Department who isn't up to her neck in murder. But Faith has no idea her "dog" Rambo is a werewolf, or that the department she serves is rotten with corruption.
But it doesn't take her long to figure it out.

Excerpt:

ABOUT ANGELA KNIGHT
Angela Knight's first book was written in pencil and illustrated in crayon; she was nine years old at the time. But her mother was enthralled, and Angela was hooked.
In the years that followed, Angela managed to figure out a way to make a living -- more or less -- at what she loved best: writing. After a short career as a comic book writer, she became a newspaper reporter, covering everything from school board meetings to murders. Several of her stories won South Carolina Press Association awards under her real name. For more of Angela’s interesting bio, visit her website: http://angelasknights.com/bio.htm

I am sure many of you already know the amazing Vickie Denny, owner of NewAndUsedBooks.com. But I bet you don't know that she's RWA's BOOKSELLER OF THE YEAR! She'll be getting that award this summer. At TKA we plan to have her join us for a chat very soon so that as authors we can ask all those booksellerish questions we have on our mind. Meanwhile, she's running a Parallel Attraction contest right now, so you guys should head on over and sign up! We're giving away a signed bottle of Alien perfume (which, I'm sorry, is so worth it for the super cool purple bottle anyway!)

Also, check out the beautiful banner she created for me up above! Isn't that gorgeous. If there are any PARALLEL ATTRACTION fans out there, and you'd like to use the banner in your signature online, feel free to grab it. I would *love* the promo! The Oldest Living Romance Reader Tells All

Bet I caught your attention, didn't I? Heh heh. It will tie into this blog post, promise.

First, for those interested in reading a length interview with me, there's one posted on Bookloons. Here's a link, and it's kind of fun for romance industry people because we discuss the paranormal trend and changes that I've seen in the market over the past decade of agenting. Also about my book and series, but a fair amount about agenting.

Hope everyone's having a great week so far, and HUGE thanks to everyone for the lovely compliments on my sizzzzzzling new cover. Oh, and speaking of that, I had dinner at church tonight and sat next to my neighbor's ninety-eight year old grandmother who is a very spry, witty woman. I would love to be like her at that age! Anyway, someone was asking about my upcoming booksigning and she asked me about it (keep in mind she's extremely hard of hearing.) So, there we are in the fellowship hall and I'm redfaced and mouthing, "It's SEXY. I said SEXY. IT'S SEXY...no, no, you don't want to read it." Next thing I know I'm sharing a bookmark with her, including the steamy description. She reads the whole thing then announces, "I need to get this book!" She wants an autographed copy. So I may have just recruited my oldest reader! LOL.

Here's the link to that interview.
Hugs to all!

Bring on the HEAT!

Big drum roll...I am SO thrilled to unveil for you my new cover!! I should preface this by saying that "cover days" in publishing are some of my favorites; in other words, I just love cover art. Seeing how my clients' works translate into that visual expression--and especially with how the packaging looks/works for the book, is incredible fun. It can also be frustrating: if a cover is terrible. If a cover is beautiful, but simply wrong. I feel really blessed that I've truly fallen in love with this next cover of mine for PARALLEL HEAT, the second title in the Parallel series.

You can't tell how cool this will ultimately look, by the way, because it will be printed on lovely foil, and in the background left will be alien writing--shimmering in a sort of holographic manner.

Let me know what you think! I can't wait to hear your thoughts.
hugs, D

My Lifetime Love

Do you remember when you first fell in love with reading? Can you pinpoint one particular book that began the love affair? I definitely remember riding the bus and reading my DICK AND JANE readers. There was a huge feeling of accomplishment to advance (I think this was the order) from the blue book to the pink one, then to yellow. But I think I fell in love with reading over time. Not sure if any single book truly signaled the beginning of my love infatuation with stories of all kinds.

Early favorites? Maude Hart Lovelace's BETSY, TACEY and TIBB stories. ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, GONE WITH THE WIND, THE SECRET GARDEN. ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS made such a huge impact that my friends and I would play a game about the young woman who lived on the island. Long hours were spent in the woods playing "the Kiranna game." (Spelling not remembered.)

Anyway, with this on my mind, I thought it would be fun to create an Amazon list of some of my favorites throughout the course of my life. By no means is this all-encompassing, nor does it include any client books for obvious reasons. Just thought it would be fun. I need to create part two because with only 25 titles to include, the list isn't fully representational. I did try to be diverse, not including say, every book by Lisa Kleypas. I didn't even include any, actually, because I can't pinpoint a favorite.

So, without further ado, here's my list of some favorites. And let me know which book made YOU fall in love with books. I'd love to hear!

A Publishing Phenomenon!

Knight Agency Link

It's an online kind of night and I had this good news to share for those who haven't seen it already, but with a bit more of the story. The publishing part, that is.
90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN is a publishing dream--and an agent's dream too. We sold this book to Baker Books and it published in fall of 2004. It's now, oh, about 17-18 months later and it finally hits USA TODAY. You think that happens often? Not very. :)

The book shipped 6,000 units to begin with, publisher promising that "we think it will grow." Or we "hope" it will. This is what usually happens with a smaller book, the publisher hoping that momentum will grow, but the truth is that the right amount of momentum rarely happens for midlist books like this one. Especially for memoirs at a time when Christian memoirs weren't doing well at all. Well, after a while of Don Piper speaking and touring to churches and doing everything in his human power to plug the book, God began to ignite a fire around this book. Then the wildfire spread and soon 10,000's of reprinted copies become hundred thousands. The book hit PW's bestseller list last fall and has never left, always just kind of hovering right off of the USA TODAY list (keep in mind, this is a Christian market book, so it's not like Dan Brown hitting the list.)

Then, last week the book hit at 130 on the list. This week, it's at 132--in other words, holding steady. This is the sort of book I dream of at night. It shipped 6,000 copies and now has more than 650,000 copies in print.

AMAZING.
Just sharing the joy!
Hugs, D

They Don't Know How I Do it!

How can Deidre do it all--agent, author, have a life. I don't see how she can possibly do all of that.

This is the question many ask of me—seeing that I’m a successful literary agent, mother, author, wife…friend, human being. The list goes on. I think it’s one reason why a few doubt whether I can juggle my agenting and author career simultaneously.

I thought it would be cool to let y’all get to know me better, and take a look at my life. For instance, what am I doing RIGHT NOW? I am sitting on my screened in back porch, with my kids (who are taking a break from water balloons and sandbox play in the back yard to have a snack), and writing a new blog entry on my laptop. The weather is perfect, probably 75 degrees, with partly sunny/partly overcast skies. There’s a light breeze reminding me of exactly why I live in Georgia and not New York City. Spring has come to the deep south, and probably won’t be departing again!

My wonderful husband and best friend is napping upstairs, I’m playing with the kids while working on my laptop—something that’s quite possible now that they’re no longer babies and getting older. At times I take breaks, doling out snacks or answers to questions: “Mommy, you know what I want? A book of potions and a book of magic.” I, of course, explained that I wasn’t behind her possible foray into sorceresshood.

Later today, the girls will head to bed at their normal hour, leaving a full night where I can write, blog, answer interview questions, or just hang with my husband and stare at him. We don’t tend to be much on the latter, we’re both too goal-driven. Judson has taken up guitar, and is now prone to sitting around jamming on his electric guitar until after I go to bed—or until I do. So what do I do during his jam sessions? I write. I edit. I work on my side-venture of being an author.

Tomorrow, it’s our girls’ intercession break, so they won’t have school all week, so I won’t have to get up quite so early. Still, I’ll be to the office no later than about 8:45 or so. Who will care for the girls? I have a nanny, Ms. Lolita (she has the best name in the world! Lolita Love—doesn’t that rock?), who will come and take care of them. Later in the day, her own daughters will come over, both of whom are about my girls’ ages. They’ll probably head to the park. They’ll definitely go to the grocery store (see, I don’t have to shop!) and at the end of the day, my honey will cook our dinner (another task that I don’t handle!)

I’m not sure if you see where I’m leading here, but I’m really blessed—my free time isn’t filled with the same tasks that occupy many working mothers, i.e. juggling in grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, dishes. THAT is how I have extra time, on top of agenting, to write. And you know, as much as many might envy me, I’ve worked my little behind off to get to this point, to have the kind of support at home that allows me to focus on what’s important beyond my agenting career. Not just what’s urgent, in other words, but the truly important elements of my non-agenting life—my daughters, my husband, my family, and my writing.

(Gotta share this—two people are walking down the street, and Riley—my three year old—just said, “see those people at that white fence. We really don’t know those people.”)

I’m so blessed; my life, both at home and professionally, is the richest, most amazing life any person could lead. If I weren’t careful, I could envy myself! LOL!
Hugs to all

Reflections in an Agent's Eye

Gena Showalter has an excellent post up on her blog about the originality of ideas within romance. She already does a great job addressing this topic, but I wanted to add my own thoughts here as an agent.

On any given day our agency receives roughly fifty queries; often several similar ideas will surface even within that small pool. On a submission level, we always see concepts repeated, sometimes many times over—and these are often “unique” ideas. The truth is, I just don’t worry about that too much as an agent, even while I’m submitting material—unless the ideas are so markedly alike that they compete with each other.

For instance, I’m shopping two witch paranormals right now, each very different. Did I send those out on the same day? No. Do I think the presence of both proposals circulating will lessen their chances of selling? No. I believe that editors have unique tastes and what works for one editor in a witch romance won’t necessarily work for another. So I've put both projects out in the market, and will now see how it all plays out.

The important thing to realize is this--every book is unique because of the author's voice and their own original fingerprint. Their own twists, their own characterizations. Ten authors will take the "same" idea and interpret it differently.

But back to the witch books I'm shopping. Once I place both titles and they're on the shelves, side by side, what then? A witch book is no more unique than a vampire book is from another vampire. Or a werewolf from another werewolf book. It’s all in the execution. One author’s hysterically funny witch book is another author’s melancholy, angst-ridden witch book. This is what I love about agenting—any core concept receives the unique imprint of its author. I will never grow tired of this business precisely because every day, every author, every project is unique in its own way.

Like Gena, I’m weary of seeing Amazon posts where “reviewers” toss accusations of copycatting around freely. In this current market, there are particular types of books that are selling; that’s what editors want. That’s what reader’s want. It doesn’t make the authors’ works derivative. Nor are they writing in a vacuum—they are a product of their times (pop culture, novels, media) like every other author alive right now. Naturally their work bears the stamp of the times within which they live.

Susan Grant and I recently had a fascinating conversation, which Gena mentions, because I gave her an ARC of Parallel Attraction. She wrote me, saying she nearly had a heart attack because as in my novel, her upcoming August release, Your Planet or Mine, also features the alien hero and human heroine meet as children. Her characters are much younger than mine (who meet in their teens), but nonetheless, it was concerning to her. She worried that readers might think she’d copied my slightly earlier release—which would clearly not be possible with her book coming out just four months later. I reminded her that there are no new ideas under the sun. That each of our takes on this idea is unique. And that of course it’s an inherently romantic idea, the concept of a hero/heroine first meeting in their youth. It’s natural for authors of integrity to want readers to know that their ideas are original. In Susan’s case and my own, we didn’t even know each other while writing our books! But I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone ridiculous Amazon poster claim, “This book starts out just like….” Probably about ME, not Susan, since I’m the new author. And I’ll feel as upset and frustrated as Gena does right now.

These posters on Amazon need to think long and hard before they toss out accusations of plagiarism and copying ideas. They’re besmirching the integrity of good people without really considering the ramifications of that. In fact, I think these posts should be directed to Amazon with a complaint. But that’s me, and integrity, honor, and character matter a great deal to me.

Big Finale Knight: BSG!!

So we get 90 whole minutes. And certain friends of mine who have spoilers have told me the Battlestar finale is going to be AMAZING. Amazing. I love that word. It basically got me through a highly stressful week!

Anyone else psyched about this finale? What are you speculating will happen? My money is still on No More Mr. Nice Gaius being a cylon. Plus, I would wager he's going to be our next president...isn't THAT a frightening thought for humanity in BSG land?

Thoughts anyone?

Oscar Gold!

I'm enjoying watching the Oscars tonight, but am disappointed that my boy Jake G (yes, he IS mine--just ask Jud. Grin) didn't win for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Still, he was fun to watch on the red carpet.

So far, the funniest thing was the montage that supposedly proved that there had never been any homoerotic subtext during the classic westerns. Lots of "take my piece" kind of moments, and quite hysterically done. I'm also laughing at the "ads" lobbying for best actresses. Especially the one for Reese's "all American ad." Is it me, or was this year's Oscar ceremony a bit more fun? Not nearly so boring?

I wish Matt Dillon had gotten an Oscar for CRASH--his role made that movie for me.

Oh, and then there's John Stewart's definition of pimp, as in Hustle and Flow: "Sort of like an agent, with a better hat." Ahem. Just don't let any pimps try to write books, or we'll be in trouble.

Hugs!

Friday Night at the Apollo

It's not fair for the girls to hog the blog space. It's Friday night, time to watch Apollo be with the WRONG girl! Why is it so hard for Ron Moore to write a storyline that doesn't involve separating the couple everyone's rooting for? It seems to be against his consitution.

Also, I've uploaded a post that's been on my mind for the past year, so I hope you'll all give it a very thoughtful read, and feel free to "react".

I'm Chatting Tomorrow at Noon!

Hey, Gang:
I'm doing a chat in the TKA chat room tomorrow at Noon EST. Would love to see you there! I know many of you also visit that blog and probably know, but thought I'd let you know.

Meanwhile, am winding down on PARALLEL HEAT. Got some amazing research info from a fellow writer today, including pictures of the USAF base that figures into the story. The wonderful woman sent me pictures! It's amazing to me how life conspires to bring you exactly what you need creatively. Take Julie Ramsey at my office, for example. As some of you will find out (and some already know! Thanks for the plug, Jax!) part of Parallel series involves fighter pilots and aerial action. Not major amounts, but enough that when she showed up for her interview and formed me that her father is involved at Lockheed, and that she could help me get a tour, and so forth, I knew that it was meant to be. And guess what else? Julie has proved a font of interviewing opportunity, arranging for me to interview an FBI linguist right when I needed it, and so forth.

Then today the fellow writer has precisely the information I need. I love it! Research is such an important part of bringing a book alive for me. If I can, I like to have visited the setting--or be planning to visit it--for the stories that I write. Clearly if the book is set off-world on some imaginary alien planet, well NO, can't do that. But I can at least draw on elements of a place I know. It's almost like method acting.

I'm not advocating this for all writers; I'm just saying that for me it breathes extra life into the world, making it more vivid. I'm lucky, too, that in my lifetime I've traveled pretty extensively. Not all at one time, but over the years. I've biked across Europe, traveled Europe by train, studied in London, ridden across the country four times. Spent time out west in a camper. You name it. In fact, there are only three states in the US that I haven't visited, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. I hope to add those in the years to come.

Anyway, that reminds me that my four year old has a bday coming up! And we plan to give her a Dora the Explorer party because she's just so into her (she really IS that into you, Dora!) We're going to make party compilation CD's that are all about traveling and exploring. THe first song on the CD? ROAM by the B52's!

Wormholes, Hyperspace...or Perhaps Just Wayne and Garth's Suck/Cut

So, I'm days away from delivering PARALLEL HEAT (too bad it's not on Amazon, or I could do my cool hyperlink action.) I am in the final descent, seatbacks and trays are in their upright positions, and I discover that suddenly I want to play. I'm talking a total worm hole threatening to suck up all my time. It's like, "Wow! I haven't been to Gena's blog lately...wait, Diana has stuff to comment and respond on... Ellen Fisher? I need to check up on her!"

I'm not publishing newbie, quite obviously, nor am I completely out of touch with my personal motivations. It's become evident to me that some part of me is afraid to finish the novel. Perhaps because I fear I can't--I still have a big battle scene to fill in--but more likely because it's natural for writers to resist giving up their characters. Only, mine get picked right up for book three, so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe, after working four weekends straight, I'm simply feeling deadline spring fever, all the more because it's gorgeous here in Madison, all aflutter with new life.

What amuses me isn't really the cause, but rather the effect: I just found myself on a Battlestar Galactica fan board. Yes, a fan board, something I essentially swore off when the television town of Roswell boarded itself up. It was an innocent misstep, truly--there I was on scifi.com, and the list of boards popped out at me.
It was then that my inner author shouted, "ENOUGH is ENOUGH!"

So, in an extreme act of will, I plan to spend the night writing until quite late, hoping to get at least fifteen pages down. That should leave about another fifteen, then as amazing as it is, I will be DONE. Until I get my revisions...
And then I start all over again.

Remaking Myself in the Image of Dido

I mean, why not? Look at the similarities, her picture and mine below. If I were British, I might exclaim, "Bloody hell! She IS Dido Armstrong!" Cut! Cut! All of you in blogland are now saying, "Has Deidre gone round the bend?" (and intoning a perfect British accent, no doubt.) "Has she spent too many hours answering agency email and reading submissions and working on her book?

Perhaps.

Well, the inspiration here is multi-fold. First of all, there's no word I'm more likely to misspell than my own name. How pitiful is that? Perhaps it's the speedy flex of the fingertips, perhaps it's my familiarity with my own name, but I am MOST likely to type: Diodre (which sounds a lot like "Bad odor") or Dido. Yes, Dido. Actually, I believe it's Didor, at which point I catch myself and start backtracking to delete. But today the high irony of the Dido Typo (nice inner rhyme, huh?) hit me.

Dido is the daughter of a literary agent, and was herself a literary agent still when discovered by Arista. So, I think remaking myself in the image of Dido is a perfectly reasonable plan. In fact, to put a PARALLEL series spin on it, perhaps she's the thin, young British alter-universe of ME!

Seriously, what if I just changed my name to Dido? Why not, really? In an era of memoir ad-libbing, surely I can acquire any ole monicker I want--even someone else's.

Just something to think about. Then again, I could drop Knight and simply be...

Unveiling a New Contest!

Look what's up! A fabulous ALIEN perfume giveaway over on NewAndUsedBooks.com. I can't believe how gorgeous this promo design is (I could only capture a small part of it, featured in this pic! I'm just tickled.

I discovered the Alien perfume while in Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC this past fall. I couldn't believe how perfect it was! I actually got a gift bottle for another alien nut like myself, but that birthed the idea that this perfume would be the perfect giveaway. Not to mention that the bottle is wicked cool and ideal for signing with SILVER pen.

Okay, so I hope you'll go check out the contest and register. This is a separate one from the contest on my yahoo group.
Hugs! D

QUERY FOR HIRE

I thought it was time that we bumped my silly, ridiculous laughing self. I always think I'll be a better, more frequent blogger, but then it never seems to happen. We've had a busy six weeks at TKA--we've placed 43 titles, closed a movie deal, and also had a number of foreign rights deals. BUSY. Plus, PARALLEL HEAT is due next week, so I'm putting the finishing touches on the book.

Diana Peterfreund's blog is always a source of interesting discussion and viewpoint, and the other day she had a great post about rejections, which I loved. Some of the discussion in the comments gave me an idea about a great blog post, so here we go.

Exclusives tend to daunt authors and I think it's largely because the agents or possibly editors requesting them don't give the authors any ground rules. They don't want to school the author about anything to give them more sophistication in the submission process, and this is done either as a simple act of omission or even to try to have a certain advantage (a long safe look at the material.)

So let's discuss ground rules for exclusives. First, if an agent or editor requests one, it's because they think the work has strong potential. They want time to read the full material without worrying about finding themselves scooped. It doesn't mean they intend to sign you on, but it is a signal that you've moved past the basic Query For Hire stage (Hi! I'm an author...) So keep this fact in mind: They are asking you to remove your material from the market for a period of time. Therefore--and never forget this--limit that period of time. They may ask for the time they need (great!), but more likely you may need to say, "Hey, that's awesome! I could grant you a six week exclusive. Is that enough time?" Just be sure you don't sound like a DIVA, but rather as someone who is pleased by the interest, but wanting to be sure they don't tie you up indefinitely.

Next ground rule--follow up. Send a quick email to be sure the material is officially logged in and received. Follow up again a week before exclusive ends. Then one more time the day before, then at last to say, "Thanks for looking at the material, but I now need to begin submitting this material wider. I'd still welcome your interest in discussing representation, but..."

Get the picture? You don't want to find yourself on the end of a six month waiting game or even discover that nobody ever received your materials. That's not the agent's job, i.e to track that YOU sent the material and that THEY received it--it's the author's job to follow up.

As always, I think a healthy dose of remembering agents are humans is a good thing. We're not sitting around dying to screw authors over by losing material or by generally bungling the submission process. But we ARE overworked, overstressed people who have dozens of people pulling on us each day (I usually get about 200 or more emails a day, just as a for instance.) So anything that makes our life pleasant and positive--a nice note letting us know that material is on the way, or a quick thank you for unsolicited critique comments, well these things are always appreciated.

So in short, remember that you drive your career. Don't hang back and wait for agents to wake up and notice things--be proactive. We all respond to a good nudge now and again so long as it isn't a daily nudge (at which point we become convinced we can't pass fast enough!) Carpe authorship Dieum!

A Big Day for Deidre

So, it's a big day for me (hence the happy pic)! An exciting day, one that I've been anticipating for a longtime--and no, it's not just that I'm heading to KFC for a chicken liver snack (Southern, anyone??) The fried snack is a reward because I'm in the midst of a mega writing weekend. Jud's away and the girls are at their grandparents' house, so I've been hammering on completion of PARALLEL HEAT, due in ten days. Yikes! End of book fear!

So, it's actually not any of that stuff. Not the Olympics, not the return of dreary weather (not that it would excite anyone after 70 degrees and football playing in the yard on Thursday evening!)

I'm beside myself because finally I'm able to unveil a small portion of my first novel for all of you! At last, the first excerpt has gone live and you can read the opening pages of PARALLEL ATTRACTION. Big day for me. Huge. Feels like a tiny promise of what the book's publication will be!

So I hope you'll go check out the excerpt, which is the first section of the prologue, and then post your reaction on my message board. I'm dying to know what readers think!

Now, I'm off to KFC and then back to the keyboard (of course, I'm ON the keyboard now, but you know what I mean...) Also, there is GREAT CONTEST STUFF on the website now. We're doing a fabulous Alien perfume giveaway, plus there's a pic of the ultra cool black iPod nano.
hugs!

GODDESS OF THE ROSE

GODDESS OF THE ROSE by PC Cast
(Berkeley, February 7, 2006)

GODDESS OF THE ROSE is a magical, sensuous retelling of Beauty and the Beast – with a modern slant. Our Beauty, Micki (named after the Mikado Rose), and all the women in her family have a special affinity for roses – their blood, diluted in water and applied during the night of a new moon, makes roses grow spectacularly. What the women don’t know is that they have this ability because they are descendants of a High Priestess of the Goddess Hecate. Hecate is Goddess of Night, Magick, the Crossroads of Man, and of Beasts. She is also the proctrectess of The Realm of the Rose – the place wherein all dreams and magick originate. This realm is guarded diligently by The Guardian, a creature on which the myth of the Minotaur was based. The Guardian swore himself into Hecate’s service for eternity, and in return the Goddess gifted him with the heart and soul of a man, even though he has the body of a beast. But all is not well in The Realm of the Rose. The Guardian made a terrible mistake, arousing the Goddess’s wrath to such an extent that she bespelled him and the realm, and Hecate swore that they would sleep eternally unless the Beast was awakened by a woman who carried the magickal blood of Hecate’s priestess, and was wise enough to see the truth, and compassionate enough to act upon it.Micki does awaken the Guardian and he abducts her to The Realm of the Rose, thinking that she would automatically break the curse placed on the realm and set things to right, but modern woman Micki is a very unexpected kind of High Priestess, and there are forces at work within the realm, both of love and of hatred that might change the shape of dreams and magick for all of eternity unless Micki is brave enough to make the ultimate sacrifice…

REVIEWS
Join Mikki on an adventure to outshine them all -- P.C. Cast’s own version of Beauty and the Beast. Fourth in the author’s Goddess Summoning series, it’s very easy to see Ms. Cast’s love and respect for mythology, and it’s even easier to fall in love with characters that I believe may be her best yet. Romance, fantasy, mystery, and adventure are all threads woven together in this beautiful account of a woman who is clearly fated for greater things. An enchanting tale from beginning to end, GODDESS OF THE ROSE truly deserves RRT’s Perfect 10, an award that is exemplified with each word and every page in P.C. Cast’s latest.

Writing with the Weather Channel Droning On

It makes lovely white noise, quite literally, as the lovely folks at TWC talk about the NorEaster that’s about to hit the north. I sit here, typing along on my novel, wishing that I lived somewhere like, um WYOMING! Someplace with dramatic, interesting weather, where I might live a whole other kind of life. I could be a skier or a snowboard queen, or perhaps spend Saturdays ice skating. Not that I can’t learn those things on my occasional trips to colder climes, but the chances of coming a killer ski bunny are pretty slim at this stage in my life.

What if I’d been like this (not my child, but quite probably the youngest little person I saw skiing out in Wyoming—the instructor has her on a leash so she won’t slide away!)

Today I might be like this:

Anyway, white noise. It’s a good thing when writing all weekend because it keeps the slightly weird, antisocial vibe from taking over too completely. So I find that listening to the bland, processed jazz of TWC has a kind of appeal. The local on the 8’s keeps you vaguely aware of time passing. You can pause and study the map of various US quadrants. All good.

The other day I was studying this favorite channel of mine, hoping against absolute hope for some snow and Jud walked through the kitchen and announced, “You can stare at that thing as long as you want, but they’re still not going to give you snow.”

He knows me just too well.

Processed jazz. Local on the 8’s. And maybe someday…oh, a little snow.

Pardon My Squeal!

Okay, I'm becoming silly author girl with every passing day. It's less than two months until PARALLEL ATTRACTION comes out now, and so all these really thrilling "firsts" are happening. Lovely Jax at Romance Divas gave me my first review, which kept me floating for weeks. I kept meaning to post it here, but it came in when I was getting ready to leave town. I do have it on my author message board attached to my site.

Now this! A five blue ribbon review from Romance Junkies! Dorine gave me a fabulous review!

ROMANCE JUNKIES REVIEW:
Catchy Snippet: Do aliens exist among us? After reading this debut paranormal futuristic novel, you may believe it’s true. For a sensual journey between two people meant for one another, I highly suggest you try this one. It left me yearning for more and the paranormal elements were mesmerizing.

***Review***

Jared Bennet, exiled alien king, tests his protectors’ patience once again. Independent and strong willed, Jared refuses to be revered as a king, and risks everything against his advisors’ mentoring. Focused on leading a secret rebel force on Earth, he is fighting for his people’s survival. Jared has no time in his life for a family. However, his people need their king to choose a lifemate and produce an heir. Even Jared doesn’t know the true reason for his resistance to their wishes.
The scope of what it all means begins when he meets human Kelsey Wells.

Kelsey Wells’ scientific mind can’t completely wrap around the events that transpire when she returns to her beloved homeland in Wyoming. Her geological research has brought her back to Mirror Lake in the mountains and the scene before her can’t be real. A fiery energy lands before her and then takes the shape of a man. His searing touch fills Kelsey’s body with the most unbelievable sensations. Then he’s gone.

Can Kelsey’s investigative nature reveal the truth? Once she knows what really happened between her and the mysterious entity, will she be capable of facing the greatest challenge of her life?

Jared and Kelsey’s lives are intertwined in an intriguing plot and they can’t comprehend it at first. Each chapter reveals another piece of the puzzle and I bet you can’t read just one! PARALLEL ATTRACTION brings a completely new meaning to what goes bump in the night and what it could be. Talk about shivers! This alien can invade my world any time!

Debut author, Deidre Knight, immerses the reader in a world that’s believable, fascinating, and extremely sensual between two people who meld into one as their love escalates. The sensuality builds to a crescendo, the plot plummets your emotion then brings you back, while bating your wishes for more at the end. Completely mesmerizing, PARALLEL ATTRACTION leaves you hoping for more.

Watch for PARALLEL HEAT in October 2006 and PARALLEL SEDUCTION in April 2007.

*****

Now, in non-book related stuff, I've just got to share that for the past week I've had a double ear infection. Um, am I like three? Four? I haven't had an ear infection since childhood, and the really great part is that my antibiotics are gone and I STILL have the infections. Got to talk to the doctor (also my next door neighbor) tomorrow. Was sorely tempted to walk down the end of my driveway today and ask if she could look into my ears. That's smalltown life for you!

Meanwhile, now my seven year old has a temperature of 103. Sigh. I just want us all to be WELL!

I posted some Wyoming pics on the TKA site (waves at Lisa! I didn't forget you, dahling!)

She must quickly learn her new magical Powers – and decide who she can trust in this strange land. She has prayed for a miracle to save her brother – could Lladrana offer that knowledge, and can she somehow return to Earth with it?

She knows she must offer the Sorcerers something in exchange, and ridding them of the Evil Sorcerer is what they want, but how will she fare in her first magical duel?
With unexpected help – and unexpected betrayal – Marian must determine where her true fate lies.

Wyoming Bound!!

So Julie Ramsey, TKA’s Marketing Manager, is on her way to Sundance. Meanwhile, Pamela and I (and our families) are on our way to Jackson Hole, Wyoming! I’m sharing a few pics from last year’s snowmobiling trip because I thought you guys would get a kick out of it. This year I’m upping the ante and taking a ski lesson.

For those who don’t know, the significance of Jackson Hole is that it’s the setting for my PARALLEL series—the whole surrounding area is, in fact. So this is my big chance to go and “touch” the world of my story.

And wouldn’t you want to touch this world again too?

I will post when I get back!
